Agents of Dissolve
& Dynamics of Fluid:
by Cathy Richardson
at Quicksilver
April 20May 27, 2007
The Quicksilver Mine Co. presents a solo
exhibition by Petaluma mixed media artist Cathy Richardson beginning
April 20th. Agents of Dissolve & Dynamics of Fluid continues in the
Gallery through May 27th.
"Agents of Dissolve,"
mixed media on wood, 48" X 48", 2007
Richardson's artwork is a narrative of her direct experience of
place, something she refers to as her "cartography of inquiry."
During daily walks "I am often reminded of the deep organic
connection the urban environment has to the natural order when city
streets are excavated, offering glimpses of living sub-strata
underneath pavement; or when tree roots dissolve man-made
structures, heaving asphalt and seeping through cracks. I also see
the endless patterns imposed on the earth by city blocks as an
incredible experience of disharmony with the natural world,
preventing our imagination from being a part of our everyday urban
lives."
In this Show, Richardson's work is contained by rectangles and
squares, emphasizing her experience walking this "grid," and
begins to hint at what might become an agent of dissolve as she
explores conditions allowing the continued flow of natural life
despite our endless human attempts to control and possess the
world.
Also in this Exhibition is an installation called The Salt Block
Experiment. Using richly textured and marked concrete,
Richardson introduces the viewer to an active visual dialogue as
the block is slowly dissolved by (agent) rain.
Cathy Richardson received her MFA from the John F Kennedy
University, Berkeley. Recent exhibitions include shows at
HAMMERFRIAR in Healdsburg and Gallery Route One, Point Reyes.
She was a recipient of the Arts Council of Sonoma County
Emerging Artist award in 2006.
