Around the House
Noriko Hasegawa's Watercolors
December 17, 2004
- January 30, 2005
The Quicksilver Mine Co. in downtown
Forestville presents a solo exhibition of recent watercolors by
west Sonoma County artist Noriko Hasegawa beginning December
17th. Titled "Around the House," this show will
continue through January 30th.
Hasegawa, born in a small village in Japan called Toyama-ken,
moved to New York with her husband in 1971. Trained as a
pharmaceutical researcher, she also studied Ikebana (Japanese
flower arrangement), and has always been an ardent gardener.
While raising her family in New York, she began painting flowers
in her garden in watercolor. In the 1980s she began serious
study of the medium with Tom Holland and Ed Brohel of SUNY
Plattsburg.
In 1987, the Hasegawas moved to Sebastopol, California, and
Noriko began to focus more on painting (home) interiors.
Everyday objects, and "things found around the house"
are her subjects in her show at Quicksilver. "The effect of
light on flowers, interiors, and everyday objects has been a
consistent theme in my work," says Hasegawa. "I use the
effects of light to create a new dynamic, which makes ordinary
things become special." Working close-up, or looking down
and into a subject, results in paintings which Robert Johnson of
the Achenback Foundation has described as "abstract
(painting) with a realistic manner."
Noriko Hasegawa's art is in the permanent collection of The
California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, The
National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C., and
others. Selected exhibitions include solo shows at the
Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum (Georgia), SUNY Plattsburg Art
Museum (New York), and at the Ren Brown Collection in Bodega
Bay.
