Botanical Grammar

The Quicksilver Mine Co. presents Botanical Grammar, a one-man exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Oakland artist Gary Brewer opening November 20th and continuing through January 3, 2010.

"Age of Wonder," Oil on canvas, 39" X 70", 2009

Brewer's most recent oil paintings explore the fanciful and eccentric in nature, life forms that are both strange and beautiful. Creating fantastical scientific studies of botany mixed with the deep sea world, Brewer draws on history and scientific thought to follow his pursuit of beauty, creating lush yet controlled gardens of contemporary visual seduction. A disciplined painter, he invests hundreds of hours in each canvas, his hand guided by his openness to sensual experience, intuition, and his innovative use of both ancient and modern tradition to release new artistic revelations.

Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Artzone 461, San Francisco, L2kontemporary in Los Angeles and the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito; juried group exhibitions include Oakland's Esteban Sabar Gallery and the Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles.
