Walking the Stone's Path:
An Installation by Loreen Barry
at Quicksilver
September 2October 9, 2005
The stone is central to the theme of Loreen
Barrys exhibition Walking the Stones Path, opening at the
Quicksilver Mine Co. on September 2nd. Following her two other solo
installations in Sonoma County, Stations Along the Way at the Museum
of Contemporary Art, and The Way of the Serpent at Quicksilvers
former Sebastopol location, this show is a continuation of Barrys
artistic quest to find a balance between the inner symbolic world
and the structural reality of the natural world. Walking the Stones
Path continues at Quicksilver through October 9th.
"2-Stone," gourd, stick, eggshell, stone, 6-1/2" X 5-1/2" X 2"
"The Path belongs to the Stone, it is natures path and its way is
not determined by our will alone. By following the Stones Path, we
can learn what nature has to teach us," says Barry. "If you look
closely at a stone, you can see rivers, mountains and other natural
formations. A stone is permanent, enduring, ancient. It can be seen
as a fixed center to find enlightenment, a place of indwelling
divinity, or a marker of that which is sacred or loved." For this
exhibit, Barrys vision takes form through her use of collected
rocks, bones, eggshell, beads, gourds, feathers, bamboo and paper,
wooden and metal objects, material and thread, as she creates
objects within an environment expressing her deep personal
connection to the Stone. "For me, it is a transcendental-empirical
symbol for the union of mind and matter, essence and form, inner and
outer," she says.
"Sacred Ossuary," 2004, mixed media, 5" X 8-1/2" X 5"
In conjunction with her installation, Loreen Barry will present
two intimate "walkabouts" inviting viewers to walk the Stones
Path with her in the Gallery. Scheduled for Thursday September
22nd at 7 p.m., and Sunday October 9th at 3 in the afternoon,
these special events are free of charge and open to all.
