Christiane Michaela Vincent

May 25—July 1, 2012

"Stardust is a large concept," says Vincent. "I chose it (for the title of this show) because I wanted to bring into focus the interrelatedness and interdependence of all phenomena, the fact that all we see is made from stardust even though it takes on a myriad of shapes and forms. The heated political debate about climate change was the inspiration for these artistic inquiries," she continues. "This work has enlarged my view of the world…increasing my understanding of how the universe works and how fragile and unique life on earth is."

For this show, Vincent has used a variety of natural materials—curly willow, lava rock, slate, wood, charcoal and sand—juxtaposed or combined with aluminum, steel, lead, resins and glass, to create bodies within our solar system, including Ishtar (Venus), the Moon, and other celestial phenomena. An installation in the Gallery lightwell, inspired by particle physics, also illustrates the depth of Vincent’s artistic exploration of earth science, cosmology, and the origins of life on earth.

Born and educated in Germany, Christiane Vincent has lived in the United States for many years, currently maintaining a studio at Atelier One in Graton, CA. Her work has been exhibited at the (former) Sonoma County Museum of Visual Art in Santa Rosa, the Bakersfield College Fine Arts Gallery, the Cunningham Memorial Art Museum and the Art Works Gallery, both also in Bakersfield. This is her third solo exhibition at Quicksilver.
