"AddEndUmUN - An Installation of Poetic Space" - A solo exhibition by Brooke Holve "AddEndUmUn #1" by Brooke Holve
"AddEndUmUn #1" 7" X 32" X 1-1/2"

"The title for this show is a play on words," says Holve. "Three years ago, while taking apart an older installation piece I had created at the Sonoma Museum of Visual Art (SMOVA), I found three old "84" building supply sales slips, each asking the question, "What are you building today?" Eventually, that question stimulated the beginning of a three year process, creating the work you see here. I also see this project as an installation of poetic space," she continues. "It records a journey, and an indefiniteness, that really invites the viewer to add to the experience."

For many years Brooke Holve's dominant medium has been bookmaking materials—paper, words, images, bookboard, cloth and thread. In this show she takes another step, creating metaphor using her books and box constructions as containers and protectors of history, and illuminating some of the ways that cultural knowledge shapes our both our individual lives, and our civilizations.

Holve, who also works as an art consultant, and an artist in residence in local high schools, has a background in bookbinding and restoration, and is a trained calligrapher.

Recent exhibitions include a solo show at the SMOVA (now MOCA) in Santa Rosa; a collaborative exhibition with Kim Collet at the Cultural Arts Council of Sonoma County; as well as invitational shows in Chicago and Salzburg, Austria.
